Yesterday's Labor Day group ride got rained out. Looks like summer left a day early as it only got near sixty and rained heavily most of the day. Was concerned I wasn't going to get a ride in today either as the forecast was 60% chance or better for rain the entire day. Didn't look too bad in the late afternoon so I donned my rain jacket and headed out with the intention of riding until it started to rain then hightail it for home. Stayed on the ridges enclosing the valley today so that at any point I could turn around and coast home, so I spent the entire day either climbing or descending. Started off with a climb up Jackson Hill and over Ridge Road. Returned on Middle Rd then down Fitzpatrik hill. Was spinning fairly well today and my constant companion of and ear ache for the last two weeks only made its presence none with an occasional dull pang. Rain had held off and the climbs were damp yet comfortable but got really chilly on the descents. My blood most have really thinned out to be cold at sixty degrees. Started the second loop of the day up Dug Road then up CR 16 to Townsend and over Sugar Hill. Saw a bunch of cowardly Canadian geese catching the front coming in from the north and heading south in thier vee formation. I was hoping that I could stay in the north a little later this year before I too make my retreat south for the winter. It started to rain very lightly as I passed through Townsend but I decided to tough it out and continue up the climb as if I continued another two or three miles I would be rewarded with fifteen miles of downgrade. It continued to mist but everything just got moist and not really wet. Pleasant downhill through the ripened vineyards again was a treat. Almost got nailed by a button horned buck as I came into town. He leaped in front of me then had trouble getting his footing on the wet pavement and I came within a foot of hitting him with my front tire. He was totally at fault but I have found in general that the deer in this area carry little or no insurance. It was a cool damp ride but not bad as rainish rides go.
