Drove down to Milton, PA for a road race at the Harvest Festival. Started racing there back in the eighties and try to return when possible though my days of riding with the front pack are gone. Hedged on whether to go or not due to changing weather forecasts with either heavy rain expected during the race or light showers. Iron Doug rode down with me but didn't plan on riding if it was raining. Got there and picked up my number and T-Shirt. At least the rain was holding off before the ride. Rode around some backstreets to warm up before the race when calamity struck. Downshifted to climb a short hill and electronic shifting experienced a problem that resulted in throwing my chain to the inside of the freewheel dragging the derailleur cage into my spokes and breaking the hanger. Hoped I had a spare hanger in my toolbox and thought I might be able to make a repair and still race. Had to walk a quarter of a mile holding up the derailleur so it didn't get sucked back into the spokes. Didn't have a correct hanger so watched the race start from the sidelines before trying to locate a replacement hanger online. Ordered one Look 795 Blade hanger from Spain and two from a shop in California. Unfortunately I wouldn't get them for several days even with expedited shipping. Wouldn't even know whether the derailleur was damaged until late next week. I have a century coming up next weekend and really wanted to ride my $$$ bike. Hung around and watched the damaged riders and bikes return from an early highspeed crash early in the race. Iron Doug got caught behind the crash and lost contact with the fast guys but still rode well enough with a small group to get eighteenth. Got home and took the Cipollini off the trainer and got it road worthy. Took it out for test ride down to Salt Point in Watkins and back. Will be riding my Italian steed until my parts come in for the Look. Turned out to be a poor and possibly expensive day.
