I'm not sure how many people go out to Mueller Soccer Park in St Charles on Mondays that are holidays like today. On Memorial day there's a group ride put on by the Bicycle Fun Club (aka Trailnet) called The Great Pizza ride - so doing that in the morning & early afternoon circumvents my need to go to St Charles. On Labor Day, I'm not aware of any organized rides, so I usually do my own 30-60 mile ride; one last ride getting ready for the MS Bike ride which is always the weekend after Labor Day. This year, however, I didn't do any bike riding, but I did see a lot of it.
Labor Day weekend is when the Gateway Cup is run - four non-pro races in different St Louis communities starting Friday night thru Monday. On top of that, the Tour of Missouri kicked off today, following the final stage of the Gateway Cup and the participants of the Cup race used the same start/finish as the Tour of MO stage.
I arrived downtown as the final category of the Men's Gateway Cup was finishing their last couple laps. After they finished I found a spot onlong the right side of the course about 20 yards past the start/finish. I watched as the 4th and final stage of the women's Tour of Missouri (I think that's its semi-offical name) kicked off for a 50 minute + 5 lap criteria.
AFter Miller made it a clean sweep of the 4 stage event, there was the cnildren's races. Everything from big-wheel/trikes to different age groupings - and many of their parents chasing them to the line or standing a the finish line to get that photo finish. Once that was done, officials went around many of the barracades to remove the Gateway Cup banners to reveal the Tour of Missour banners behiind them. Then the TofM participants started comming up the roadway to sign-in for the day's race. This stage was 10 laps of a 7.5 mile course. There was a three-rider breakway during the first lap that had a 50-60 second lead through the 6th or 7th lap before they were finally realed in. And, as everyone predicted before the race, it was a sprint finish with Mark Cavendish pulling off the victory.
