 Chubb Hollow Redux
Took three days to get my numbers up to where I feel comfortable riding with my new system. Usually spend Labor Day riding a metric near Erie PA but with my cutback in riding events decided to forgo it this year and do a full century on Saturday. Weather was decent and decided to try Chubb Hollow again. Last time I rode it was most unpleasant and hoped for a better result today. Wind was out of the north and fairly light and would hopefully aid me in the second half of the ride if things went poorly. Started out climbing out of Watkins on SR 14 & 14A to Reading Center. Climbing did not go well as speed was in the eights where I have recently been in the high nines and low tens. I could blame it on the wind but most likely it is continuously fading fitness. Second half of the climb improved it a bit but was less than stellar. Legs did recover nicely and had good speed out of Reading on !4A. Made an attempt to get my fifteen in an hour but despite doing a few miles near twenty the math and clock started to reveal that I wasn't going to make it. Made fourteen but the poor climb pretty much eliminated getting much higher. Hammered the downhill to Dundee and got the average over fifteen before starting the upgrade to and up Chubb Hollow. Had really strong legs up the hollow and did the few miles much faster than usually. The final kicker at the top of the hollow went well but couldn't maintain the above average climbing. With the climbing over hoped to use the downhill and tailwind to get the average for the ride up to seventeen. Ran well to Himrod and kept good speed to Lakemont. Legs started running out of juice soon after and just tried to maintain the average I had. After the downhill to Watkins, I was in the mid-sixteens but lost a bit in the tourist traffic going through the many lights and bumper to bumper tourist traffic through the village. Despite the slow start on the climb had a decent result for me and didn't experience any discomfort this time out.
