 Gran Prix Festival
Should have been a short easy ride today to rest my legs with a race coming up tomorrow and a century on Sunday, but as I have been riding so weakly lately I didn't really think that time off would help much. Took a morning ride up to Logan. Started out too cool for comfort and even the climb up skyline didn't help much. Legs were slow and stiff up the climb but things picked up when I started to get passed by a series of classic sports cars that are in town for the Gran Prix festival. Seems that the organizer had picked skyline as one of the tour routes for the cars. Felt better on the second climb up to Logan and actually climbed into the clouds as the cloud ceiling was at 1000 ft. So I was treated with riding in the fog for a few miles until I dropped back down below the ceiling when I cut back down to SR 414. Rode down the main drag in Watkins where they were getting set up for two laps on the old Gran Prix circuit through the streets and surronding hills of the village. Overall a slow cool ride but much improved by encountering some classic traffic.

Rode in the afternoon with Mighty Young Joe up to Lakemont. We kept an easy pace and discussed the race tomorrow and of course all the grapes along the way and whether or not the winers sprayed them with chemicals to keep itinerants like ourselves from feasting on them. We timed it so we could get back to the old Gran Prix course at 6:30 and watch the parade laps. Had a pretty good view of the cars, as while there was standing room only on the streets in town, we had a good spot on the downhill section a mile or so up the hill. Was kind of neat to smell the exhaust of some of the alcohol fueled cars and hear their roars. After the laps were over we rode down into town and cruised around the festival where the smell of alcohol of a different sort was also abundant. Headed home and got back a little before dark which is coming much too early. In hindsight I guess we should have taken lights and we could have stayed for the fireworks.
