I've Got Something to Say

As I was picking out my rental car on Friday, I was a little disappointed not being able to find the AUX port to connect my MP3 player into the system. I was then consoled that the Sirius Satellite Radio was available and working, so I found The Message channel to provide me with Christian Pop & Rock music for my time in the car over the weekend. Then again, I wasn’t going to be spending all that much time in the car during my brief time in San Diego.
After checking out of the hotel Sunday morning, I drove up to Vista to attend church at Stonebrooke Church with my step-father, John Bowman. I walked into the sanctuary right as the 9 AM Classic Service started and was immediately overcome with emotion as we started singing Majesty. I especially enjoyed the Celebration Choir singing How Can I Keep From Singing, a song I’ve sung in choir several times before. After the service, John & I devised a plan to drop my car off at TGI Fridays, where we would eat lunch but not until we went to the cemetery. I rode with John, and his new bride Bernice, to the cemetery where he & I spent a few minutes at the grave markers of my mother and his first wife Patsy.
While we stood there, one of the stories I shared with John was about the songs we sung during the graveside service two years ago. Pastor Brooke’s was officiating the service and stated that it be appropriate for us to sing a song or two and someone from the back of the crowd started singing and we all followed along. One of the songs we sang was Amazing Grace. I went on to tell John that sometime that service I mentioned to Jacque and Andrea the urge I felt at the end of one of the verses of that hymn to jump into the bridge from the arrangement by Chris Tomlin, another song our choir has done several times – it almost felt like something was missing, because we are so used to singing those lyrics. However, at that time, I wasn’t confident enough I’d remember all the lyrics correctly, and I wasn’t sure how many others gathered around were familiar with that arrangement, so I didn’t press the issue at the time.
I went on to tell John that while we were making our way from the church to drop off my car at TGI Fridays, that arrangement by Chris Tomlin came over the airwaves of the radio station I was listening to – and if the vehicle had the AUX port for me to connect my MP3 player, I would not have had joy of hearing this song this morning.
Even though we spent only a few moments at the grave site today, they were moments of joy, and our conversation over lunch was very enjoyable too. John started by asking how things were going a Fee Fee Baptist Church, and I was able to tell him how things I saw and heard at the service this morning related to how & why FFBC has started working on being a Church of Irresistible Influence and how today we were starting a stewardship campaign called Stepping Up Together.
After lunch, I made my way back to downtown to return the rental car and get to the airport to get through security and wait for my plane. First, the line for security at the terminal was not as long as it was Friday when arrived. Secondly, I was leaving from a different part of the terminal that used its own separate security check point, and there less than a dozen people in line ahead of me.
My connecting flight in PHX was delayed leaving San Francisco due to fog (in the middle of the afternoon), so we were about 45 minutes late leaving PHX, and didn’t’ arrive into STL until 11 PM, but oh what a marvelous weekend!
