 Quest for an Eighteen
Goal for the day was a hard ride on the Sullivanville Hill course with an eighteen mile an hour average. Weather seemed favorable with south wind for a final push down the valley. Course climbs for eleven miles up two hills and then descends on downgrade for twenty-two miles. I used to be able to do the course averaging over twenty so figured an eighteen average wasn't a pipe dream. Started up Old Odessa for the first climb and had a lackluster result having to hammer the last half mile grade to just get a ten average. Pretty good for the year but not really a good climb. At least I wasn't mathematically eliminated in the first two miles of the ride. Wind didn't bother much on the section to the Junction and actually put out some good watts that was enough to put me in a good position for the second climb out of Alpine on SR 13S. It is a highway climb two miles long mostly around five percent. Usually try in recent times to get over the top in under an hour total. I had several minutes to spare and needed to use the time on the downhill to boost the average. Wind or flagging legs became a factor and was only able to get into the thirteens over the first hour of riding. Realistically needed to be around fifteen but still had a chance with the final tailwind and twenty miles of downgrade still ahead. Rolled into Hanover Square with a sixteen that still was a little shy of what I needed but now was out of the headwind. Had a really poor passing through the square due to traffic that wasn't counting against my time as long as I was stopped, but it did mess up my momentum. Got the tailwind and pushed hard up the final upgrade in Pine Valley but wasn't able to keep the average climbing. Lost it mentally as the tank ran dry and had to be satisfied with at least getting over seventeen. Had a strong fun attempt but couldn't hold the watts and speed I needed over the second hour. Need to get a better time up the first climb or get really lucky with favorable winds to get over eighteen this year as rapidly running out of warm weather riding.
