Along the bike ride home Friday after work, I realized my wedding band was missing. With that revelation, I stopped, dismounted the bike, grabbed my cell phone from my saddle bag. Searching the bag first to see if my wedding band had slipped off there -a fruitless effort. With cell phone in hand, I mounted the bike and pedaled back to Hilton.
Calling ahead to the Bus Garage, I spoke to Sylvia explaining my predicament. Sylvia tried to help, by searching where I thought the ring could have slipped from my finger. Additionally, she swept the storage area where I had parked my bike. Her effort was unsuccessful.
Arriving back at the garage, I sifted through trash and garbage, bathroom towels and partially eaten food. Then searched the floor in the computer room, still to no avail.
Fruitless was my search for the ring, but there was the possibility that it slipped off my finger while digging potatoes in the garden earlier. Next step is procuring a metal detector to assist my search...
After an extensive online research on metal detectors, I resigned to purchase one. So off to "Dan's Crafts and Things" Ginny and I go. What a cool place -lot's of helpful folks. While I was looking at their display of metal detectors one of their employees mentioned the ability to rent one of the devices. Dan's rents a Garrett 250 metal detector for $20/day with a $50 deposit.
After procuring the detector, we stopped over at my Mother-in-Law's house, catching up on the latest. Then we headed to Chen's Garden for a belated celebratory birthday dinner with Ginny's sister, Tricia.
We arrived back home at dusk. I removed the Garrett Ace 250 from the trunk of the Versa and went straight to work at the potato plot. With the detector on the "Jewelry" setting, on the first pass over, it detected an object with a beeping sound. Night time was descending, it was getting darker by the moment. Beep, beep, beep, passing the detector over a 12" by 12" area. Holding onto the device with my right hand, while bending over and digging the dirt with my left hand. I dug down about 6". The area where the beeping sounded, seemed to shift. I couldn't see anything but brown earth. Ginny, assisted with a flashlight. Passing the Ace 250 detector over a smaller, and smaller area, narrowing the search with an ever more isolated whine of detection. Ginny was shining a tiny but bright 9 led flashlight, and there was a golden glint in the dirt. Behold my ring! It took all of about 5 minutes of effort.
Rereading the inscription and remembering it says: "LOVE ALWAYS 21st ANNIVERSARY, VIRGINIA". Wow, it was 16 years ago she gave me the ring. I am so lucky and happy to have her as my Wife and have that ring back on my finger!
