Comments: 11th Seagull Century Metric, Lawrence stoking. Great ride. Felt strong right till the end. Pretty quick trip. Finished in about 5 hours clock time. Don't know what our average was -- speedo battery died since last year.
Looked over the tires pretty carefully earlier in the week. I couldn't see any real problems -- no cuts and no threads showing. And they did get us through the Sea Gull just fine. But they are ten years old and have been showing cracks for more than five years. So I found replacement tires on the web (some dealer in Londonderry, Northern Ireland). $75 delivered -- a pretty good deal. Ordered on Sunday, arrived on Wed, with free inner tubes included. These tires were quoted as much as $50 apiece by various web sellers. Mileage at the change was 3565. |

Odometer on my regular bike now stands at 17,000. That doesn't include a good 5,000 miles from its first two (odometerless) years.
I've certainly gotten my money's worth in enjoyment from this bike.

| Comments: Went out to explore the new ICC bike trail. Once I got warmed up, I enjoyed this crystal-clear morning. The ICC bike trail is a joke. It goes from nowhere to nowhere. The section I rode, starts at Needwood Road and ends at Emory Lane. I think the trial picks up again further East, but I couldn't see how from the ground. |

Comments: Folder is pissoir kaput. Rode it to work this morning. After work, I rode to Winkler's to pick up the car. As I was folding it to load in the trunk I heard a crack. I didn't realize what had happened till I got home and tried to unfold it. The frame broke in two places, both near the hinges.
This was a misbegotten bike. Very heavy. Not all that easy to fold. Not very stable. Yet I logged 538.6 good miles on it. The best bike in the world is the one you're on and this one's portability made it that on enough occasions.
I bought this bike used from a fellow Potomac Pedaler, Denny Freezer, when he upgraded to a Bike Friday. Paid $75. Almost immediately, one of the cranks broke. Gordon wouldn't touch it. He was mad at DaHon for selling direct and undercutting bike shops. Larry had a crank-chainwheel the right size (60 tooth, I think) and put it on for $45. Then, in Augusta, I stripped the threads on the front axle and ended up buying an entire 16-inch kids-bike wheel. I always intended to move the axle from the cheap wheel to my nice aluminum wheel, but never got around to it. Guess it was just as well.
It's pretty fortunate that it didn't break when I was rolling. I suppose if I'd hit a hard bump while standing, it might have been a disaster. Then again, the bike wasn't stable enough for being out of the saddle very much. |
