Comments: East Village, Airport, Saybrooke, Olde Towne. Breakfast at Cafe Sophie. The food is not that good. Last time I had Norwegian pancakes. Won't do that again. This time, oatmeal, which wasn't very good, either. Still, I like the place. And the coffee is excellent.

Comments: Test ride. New wheel, chain, and cassette. Seems to be fine. Had to tweak the derailer limit screws. Wheels are now all made for 10-speed. Travis gave me a spacer to put under the lock ring of a 7-speed cassette. 724 miles on virtual odometer.

Comments: East Village, Scotland, Airport. Left crank started falling off, so I made a beeline for home. This has been going on since I replaced the bottom bracket last year. I'm gonna need a new crank. For the time, I'll use the slightly bent one from the Riv. car crash. But I'm having trouble getting the pedal off the old crank. Let's see what WD-40 can do.

Comments: Exploration Lane. Bike is falling apart. Saturday the crank came loose. I substituted an old, somewhat bent, crank of the same length (170 mm). Couldn't get the pedal off the old crank Borrowed one from the tandem. On the way to work, the bottom bracket started making awful noises. I think it is done. Only replaced it last year, but it was N.O.S. and I'd had it around for more than 10 years. Even so, 837 miles is not very far. Turns out you can get just a left crank without buying the set. I'll try that and a new bracket.

Comments: Replace front brake pads and test. Old ones were right down to the limit -- 1 mm. at 2491 miles. Job was a little tricky. Glad I looked at YouTube first. I would have missed the clip on the retaining screw.

Noise that I thought was coming from a loose headset is, in fact, coming from the saddle.

Till now, I thought that the ticking noise I hear when I pull the front brake was a blip on the rotor. Today I saw the real cause. When I pull the front brake, the tension on the spokes causes one spoke to graze the brake caliper. You can see the scrapes on the caliper. I noticed it when the bike was on the stand and the spokes are evenly stressed. When I'm on the bike and the top spokes are stressed more, it doesn't happen. I suppose it's something I could live with, but I think I will consult with the bike shop.

New brake pads seem to work well. There was not much adjusting -- just let out amlost all the slack. Didn't need to do any aligning. Both sides pull off clean.
