Comments: Seagull Century with L. Our 18th time. The t-shirt says this was the 35th one, so we've done more than half of them.
Today was about the worst weather we've had on this ride. It started to rain before we got to the first rest top at Washington High School. We never had to contend with a downpour, but it was steady for the rest of the ride and we got pretty well soaked. Fortunately, temps were mild -- in the 60's. Some well-meaning citizen set up his own rest stop 8 or 10 miles from the finish, at which point we were beginning to fade. He had set up a canopy so we could get out of the rain, and was serving hot chicken broth. There's still a lot of good in the world.
The metric wasn't quite a century -- only 94 KM. With the bad weather, we weren't about to complain. The route seemed quite different from past years, especially the part just preceding the turn on to College-Backbone Road.
I stayed over in Salisbury. L. drove this morning from CP. We got started later than I would have liked -- about 10:30. By the time we hit the rest stops, they had already started to pack up. In past years, we've seen thousands of other cyclists. This year, very few. That's probably a combination of our late start and the bad weather.
Our pace was 13.5. That's down from down from last year's 14.3. Best I've recorded was 16.4 in '07. I tired a bit last year, but not this year. We probably just didn't hit it as hard. |
