At first I thought it was the cold, but still no pulses from the transmitter registering. Maybe it's the transmitter battery.

Comments: Inaugural ride on the new bike. Meandered around near the bike shop. Griffith, Penn Shop, Long Corner, Shaffersville, Shaffers Mill, Florence, Bennett.

Loved everything about the bike except the saddle. Rohloff is great. Gear range is plenty wide. Low gear is no faster than walking. Will probably only use highest gear for chasing a tandem downhill.

After the ride, back at the shop, I swapped out the stock Selle Italia saddle for a Brooks Flyer.

This was a pretty hilly ride -- 1000 ft of climb in 16 miles. The bike has the gears for it.

New bike is great. Love the Rohloff. I always have the right gear. Bike is smooth and solid. Feels great. Only one problem is easily fixed -- seat post won't allow the nose of the saddle as high as I like it. That is easily fixed.

Just from lifting it onto the hooks, this bike seems heavier than the Riv, but it doesn't seem any slower. I had a 12.5 pace, which is about what I would have had on the Riv for this hilly ride.

Comments: Exploration Lane. The left crank came loose on the way in, so I motored home with the bike on the car rack. I fear the crank is ruined. That's usually the case when they come loose like this. I'm sure I followed Sheldon's advice re-installing the cranks after changing the BB. Ride a mile, then re-tighten and do not repeat.

Comments: Staged the car back at work. Biked home on the Americano. Getting close to having it dialed in. Had to reverse the seat-post to get the saddle nose up where I like it. Comments: Long way in -- Charlene QV, FH, WG, Olde Towne. Saddle situation is better, but not there yet. Saddle itself is comfortable enough. Creaks like mad, though. I think it might have been in a crash. There were some scuff marks on it when I picked it off the rack. Today, I noticed that the adjusting bolt is bent. I turned the seat post around and now I can get the nose up where I like it. But now, I'm too far forward. We'll get it straightened out. Even with these quibbles, the bike is a joy to ride.

Comments: Test ride for suspect crank. Left crank of the hybrid came off the other day. Usually, that means the aluminum square-taper crank is ruined. I put it back on, rode a mile, like Sheldon says, and tightened it again. After a few more miles, it is still tight. Hope it stays.

Horrible creaking coming from bottom bracket. I suddenly realized that when I re-attached the cranks after the recent bottom bracket replacement, I neglected to grease the spindle. Sheldon would be appalled. Circled back home, pulled the cranks, greased the spindle, and replaced the cranks. Now they are quiet. Perhaps the left side crank, which worked its way off the other day, is not irreparably damaged.

Shifts are really smooth now with the new cassette and chain.

Just did a short loop through Charlene, Quail Valley, Cross Country, and Whetstone.

Comments: Motored home by way of Mount Airy Bikes. Exchanged seat-post and saddle. Original seat-post couldn't put the nose up where I like it. Brooks Flyer saddle had a horrible creak. Now I have a B17. Did some test riding around the neighborhood. Springs on flyer are so stiff you'd think they wouldn't make much difference. My butt says otherwise. If I can't break in the B17, I'll swap saddles with the Raleigh or the Riv.

Today was Bike To Work Day, and I missed the party. Shoot! Well, at least I biked to work.

Comments: Home to Red Lion, Pa. Matt Baer and I planned a two-day out-and-back. For me, it was a test Red Lion was the first stop on my planned odyssey to Plattsburgh. I see now that my original plans are infeasible. By the time we made it to our B&B in Red Lion, I was completely spent.

Things started out pretty well. I left home right about 7, and made it to Matt's in just over half an hour. We made Manchester just after noon, where we stopped for lunch. We had 49 miles and some hills behind us, but were feeling confident. But the last 20 miles or so were brutal. No long climbs, but lots of
steep ones. I barely made it to our destination. Matt was in better shape than I, but he did not balk at my suggestion that we call for a rescuer. L. came and picked us up the next day. I might have been able to make it back with a full day of rest, but I'd have been in serious trouble if I'd attempted to stick to the plan.

Trimmed off the extra length of the stays on the new fenders. 18-inch bolt cutter was the perfect tool.

Stopped at the 7-11 in Laytonsville for a coke. Chatted with another cyclist who had just finished a 110-miler to Keysville and back. He had just loaded his bike into his car. This was about 3PM. He said he had started at 7. I'd say he made pretty good time.

Time was moved up to 7AM. Probably a good idea. It was starting to get pretty warm by the time we finished (a few minutes before 10.)

Was an enjoyable ride. Sugarland is pretty bumpy, but all the other roads were in decent shape. Tons of cyclists out on this sunny day.

I think this is the first club ride I've done since the pandemic started.

Comments: Seagull Century with L. Our 17th time. Excellent weather. Crisp in the morning but very clear and dry with just a bit of wind. The crowd seemed as big as in pre-covid days, but we didn't see a soul we knew.

The route has changed. Some roads on the leg to the first rest stop are new, as are most of the roads between the rest stops. The second rest stop has moved from Snow Hill down the road to Pocomoke City. I liked the changes.

Saw a couple crashes. Just past Pocomoke City, a fellow got too close to a guard rail, couldn't steer under the fall, hit the rail and went down. Seemed like he was with friends, so we didn't stop.

Then, just past the finish line, back in Salisbury, a fellow went down among the milling cyclists and pedestrians.

We had a pretty good pace -- 14.3. Up from 13.9 in '19, and 14.1 in '18. Best we've done since '14 when we were 15.5. (Best I have recorded was 16.4 in '07.)

A single-engine Mooney, on approach to runway 14 hit a high-tension line near where it crosses Goshen Road. The airplane, tangled in the wires, hung there with two people inside. Miraculously, they survived. It took about 6 hours to rescue them. When I got there, the airplane had just been lowered to the ground by a crane. I got a picture.

Comments: Laytonsville ramble. Blunt, Huntmaster, Goshen School, Rocky, Griffith, Zion, Riggs. Cold. Checked S&S couplers. Top one was so loose I could turn it by hand. Bottom not that loose, but not fully tight, either. Need to keep an eye on this. Would be a disaster for both me and the bike if one of these came apart whil under way.
