In our area, the number of threats to cyclist from animals far exceeds those of vehicles. With 110K miles of experience I've watched numerous fellow cyclist put in the hospital by dogs, usually causing wrecks. Although I love a friendly dog, our TN state laws make it clear they are NOT allowed in the road with fairly serious possible fines for damages, including felonies. I've tried it all to escape the immediate threat, but eventually ones is going to catch you wrong and kill or seriously injure you or a friend. My wife, with probably 60K miles of riding, was taken out by a dog. The concussion almost killed her. Cost $13K. I carried an expandable police baton for a while, but now carry a 22 pistol with rat shot after recommendation from a friend. The dogs never come back for more. Seems serious, but so is death from a wreck, and you may be saving the dogs life by keeping it out of the road. Too bad this is not an option in IL.

I've always loved riding bikes. I had several paper routes as a kid riding several miles a day. Until recently I was a runner until I road in my first MS ride. I'm hooked on biking now. I ride whenever the wife and my job let me. I try to do at least one century ride a month during the April - September warm months and have a trainer for the winter months. I captain the team for TransCanada. We're sponsored for the Texas BP MS150 and the Illinois MS150 Tour de Farms. I also am on the steering committee for the latter. Happy pedaling! |
