I bought my first road bike when I was 13. It was a volkcycle mark V. I think I paid around $300.00 for it in 1976. I loved this bike; it was fast, good looking and light (Ha-Ha). I rode this bike all summer mainly in Jackson County, Michigan. The craziest ride on this bike was, when I was 15 I rode from Wayne Mi to Monroe Mi and back to see a girl I had a crush on. Thank God for the I-275 Bike trail, it was only a year or two old and in great condition (too bad the State hasn't maintained it). I didn't ride much after I started driving. Then at age forty two, a friend of mine (John N) had someone loan him an old schwinn and he was hooked. He kept bugging me about getting a bike, he even when so far as to find me an old Schwinn E-bay and for fifty buck I said what the heck. When I started riding I weighted 273 lbs, Four months later I weighed 239 lbs and, I rode in my first sprint distance triathlon. The Island Lake Tri in Novi (what a great event) my goal was just to finish the race. Well I did much better than I thought I would with a time of 1:30. What a blast, I had hoped to two or three Tri's last year but I was sideline by work and injury. This year I hope to ride my first century and to do an International distance Tri or Olympic distance. I can't thank my friend John enough for getting me back on a bike, it's just as much fun as it was when I was thirteen, it just hurt's more now. |
