2014 Trek 1.5
Road bike |
Description: Aka "The Roadster". Finally got a replacement for the stolen Felt road bike - the 9.3 kg Trek 1.5. Alloy frame; carbon forks; 20 speed. The downside is this bad boy really makes you feel every nook and cranny of the road; the upside is it's as light as a feather, slices through the air nicely and munches the miles with not too much effort...Frontwheel/tyre replaced after nasty bash off a kerb on ice...new BB, chainset, cassette and chain after 2000 miles and again after 8900 miles (except BB) Frame 100 Series Alpha Aluminium Forks Trek carbon road Wheels Alloy hubs w/Bontrager AT-750 alloy rim; Shimano R500 Tyres Bontrager R1 Hard-Case Lite, 700x23c;AW-1 700x 23c Shifters Shimano Tiagra STI, 10 speed Front Deraileur Shimano Tiagra Rear Deraileur Shimano Tiagra Crank FSA Vero, 50/34 (compact)[replaced early 2017, and again mid 2022] Casette Shimano Tiagra 12-30, 10 speed [replaced early 2017, and again mid 2022] Pedals Nylon body w/alloy cage Saddle Bontrager Affinity 1 Seat Post Bontrager Approved, 27.2mm, 8mm offset Handle Bars Bontrager Race VR-C, 31.8mm Stem Bontrager SSR, 31.8mm, 10 degree Headset 1-1/8" semi-cartridge bearings Brake Set Alloy dual-pivot Front brake cables have been replaced twice since acquiring; unsure if this is my riding style or the force and frequency needed to brake during (usual) city riding or weak parts. After 5932 miles, the front chainset, cassette, rear derailleur cable were replaced.

Full Susp XC Mountain bike |
Description: Aka "The Rockbasher". Bought a few months old, rarely ridden, for £950. Although a large 19" frame, when seated it feels even a little small at times. 27.5" fat wheels absorb Glaswegian potholes well. Tested at Cathkin Braes, it handles superbly with extra sharp disc brakes and clean gear changing, however on the heavy side. Front crank and bottom bracket replaced at 1832 miles. New chain and rear cassette at approx 1600 miles. The full suspension is a dream - like riding on air and can handle any terrain you want to throw at it. It passed the Nevis Range's Top Chief black run with flying colours, and Kinlochleven to Fort William via the West Highland Way (though the rear derailleur snapped off towards the end of that run (intact and was re-fitted)). Also coped well with southern end of WHW, from Milngavie to Balmaha. WHW full length South to North (except the climb out of Kinlochleven towards Fort Bill) was done on this; dragged/pushed/carried the beast over the east Lomond shores - not recommended - full carbon frame preferable, however this bike took a serious amount of abuse and kept riding. Several trips to and along the top of the Campsie Fells as well as Tak Ma Doon... Next, Glencoe...

2008 Decathlon Rockrider (version unknown)
Downhill Mountain bike |
Description: This is a "library picture" of the bike I hired for the 2008 Loire Valley trip. It featured font fork suspension, quick-release front wheel, crappy (18-speed) gripshift gears and cantilever brakes. A heavy bike (steel) but OK for climbing small gradiaents owing to the small front sprocket (rendering it pretty useless for sprints on flats). I think it was a 5.4.

2006 other Rally Traffic
Cruiser bike |
Description: Piece of Chinese-made junk that I mistakenly bought at Auchan to tide me over. Most miles done on this bike were in and around Warsaw. When last seen it was residing in Gdansk under new ownership. Heavy frame, no shocks, it required a lot of servicing and new parts (spokes, then a new wheel, brakes, cables, tyres (literally fell apart), mudguards and pedals) within the first 12 mths. Good for shopping and commuting short distances. 18-speed.
