Like most American kids (from my generation), I spent a considerable amount of my childhood on a bike. The first bike I remember was Huffy with a huge motorcycle style seat. Moved from there to various BMX style bikes.
It wasn’t until 1997 that I rediscovered the joy of two wheels. I dropped a load of cash (for me, at the time) on a sweet Iron Horse Mountain bike and took to the streets. At first it was commuting the 3 miles to and from work. I was real proud of myself to ride that far. I progressed to a little off roading and had a blast. In 1999, I sold everything and moved to the mainland to finally be able to purchase a house. It was in Seattle that I started my interest in recumbents and bought two “Redbent” bikes from a guy in So. California. The bike was fun to ride and a whole new experience. Too bad the quality of the bike was atrocious. The steering tie-rod on both bikes broke. One broke in shipping, the other while I was riding! (Last I hear, he was drummed out of the bike business due to lawsuits.) From there I bought a BikeE. Talk about an easy bike to ride! This is when the bug really bit. I needed more speed. A few months of research, and the help of a top-notch bike shop I decided to pick up a used P-38 Lightning over a Goldrush Replica.
