Rode my first century when I was 9 (yes, on my own bike); Was dragged on many other rides as a child by my parents who were looking for ways to have “quality family time.”
Participated in several organized rides, including 2 DALMAC tours prior to finishing high school.
As a teen and young adult, I got away from cycling. In 1998 I decided to ride DALMAC, this time for myself. Finished it, but didn’t train nearly enough and swore that “I’d never do that ride again.”
Fate is an interesting thing. My wife is an active adventure racer, and her sister is a retired professional cyclist who now coaches a youth development team in California. They hooked me up with a new bike in 2005, and I’ve re-discovered the fun and fitness that cycling can provide.
Now, with two more DALMAC tours under my belt since the debacle in ’98, I continue to ride as a means of fitness, and social entertainment. With three kids of my own, I’m trying to drag them along much like my father did to me-hoping they’ll catch the bug at some point in their lives as well.
