I was a tomboy as a girl and riding my bike was a big part of my life until my injury in 1975. At that time, I was riding a hot pink girl's 10-speed.
The first adapted "bikes" made at that time were even worse to ride than a tricycle -- slow, heavy and cumbersome. So I quit riding. It was only a few years ago, that I got my first real handcycle, and I was hooked! They were finally making bikes you could actually ride easily and competively made with regular bike parts.
My first handcycle was a cherry red Freedom Ryder. It was sweet and not bad for my first. As a competitive wheelchair racer, however, I found I was faster in my racer than my handcycle, so I traded it in for a TopEnd XLT Pro. It fits me better, particularly with regard to my high level of injury. I'm also getting faster because of proper training and coaching from fellow handcyclists.
I can't explain how much it means to be able to ride again -- feel the wind in my face and the freedom handcycling offers -- but I can and do recommend it to everyone and love sharing my experiences! |
