I've been riding as long as I can remember. My first memory of getting hurt was breaking my collar bone in a wreck in Kindergarten. I rode through elementary school on old garage sale bikes, then through junior high on an old Huffy 10-speed. We moved to the country in high school, and my riding took a break. In college, I bought a Giant Perigee, that I still own and which is still in phenomenal shape. It was my only form of transportation. My waist line was evidence of that. Three years later I bought a Kona Fire Mountain, which I also still own and have tricked out as a commuter. I ride it nearly every day now, but the Giant is all but unused... a keepsake, and little more.
After college, I joined the workforce, bought a car, and left cycling behind. Both bikes fell into disrepair, and saw more use by friends than myself.
Cut to three years ago in the Spring of '05. I started getting back into shape again, and remembered how fit I was in college when I rode everywhere. I cleaned up the Giant and took her out. At the time, a 20 miler was a big deal to me. Later that year, I got a call from my brother. He'd continued his passion for mountain biking, and during a visit to see him in Portland, OR, I cemented my desire to get back, and stay on the saddle.
Through contacts in his industry, my brother got word of an '03 Torelli Scappa for sale on the cheap. I was able to scrounge together the money, and the bike, built out with a nearly full Campy Record Gruppo was mine. It is now my pride and joy.
I enjoy long rides, short sprints, hills, flats, wind, calm, rain, shine, warm weather, cold weather... basically any condition at all as long as I'm out and riding. |
