I used to bike. Then I stopped. Now I'm doing it again.
Bicycles

26" Comfort bike
Description:  This bike comes with fenders, dynamo-driven front and rear lights, and a full chainguard. I ride any time in any weather--no bike clothes required. I set it up with a pair of folding baskets and use it for errands, shopping and socializing.

Lifetime Odometer: 9,193.0 miles

Folding bike
Description:  A light touring bike. It's as light as my rigid singlespeed bike, has 27 gears (gears - what a concept) and fits in a suitcase.

I bought this when I signed up for my first commercial bike tour and needed a serious touring bike. After the first 1000 miles or so, I even learned to ride it with no hands (the small wheels make the steering kind of twitchy).

Lifetime Odometer: 14,527.0 miles

Single Speed Road bike
Description:  From the elves of Rivendell... comes a steel-framed singlespeed road machine that fits me almost as well as a custom bike would. And it's pretty.

I installed a smaller freewheel so that the gearing is now 40/16 (68 gear inches) and a singlespeed crank (no extra chainring and chainguard). Even though the flip-flop hub is free-free, a fixie-riding friend of mine thinks I should put a fixed cog and a retaining ring on the flip side. I'm thinking about it...

Less Gears! More Beers!

Lifetime Odometer: 9,848.0 miles

XC Mountain bike
Description:  aka the Suicide Machine. The SM (it had Suicide Machines decal on it when I got it) is a beater mountain bike that I set up with platform pedals and a rack and folding baskets. I used it for running errands and for other rides where it helps to show up in regular clothes. I retired it when I got my Breezer Uptown 8.

Lifetime Odometer: 1,013.0 miles

Hardtail XC Single Speed Mtn bike
Description:  Singlespeed ATB, with rigid aluminum frame, set up for riding around town (44/16; 68 gear inches). I retired this one in December 2006.

Lifetime Odometer: 3,049.0 miles
No planned events for 2024
