History:

In 2001, when I was nearing 50 and hadn't biked since getting a driver's license, my office moved to within 3 miles of my house. On little more than a whim, I walked into the LBS and came out on a new Raleigh hybrid. Rode it to work the next day and liked it. Kept it up. Got a little stronger, which made it still more enjoyable, which made me want to ride more, which got me a little stronger. Everything just snowballed. Now I have lots of bikes, belong to a bike club (www.potomacpedalers.org), and do multi-day tours. I still commute.

This picture reminds me of a Roz Chast cartoon.

Tandem Mountain bike
Description:  That's my wife and I aboard. This bike goes anywhere. (Well, anywhere I want to go.) It's been the length of the C&O Canal towpath. It's surprisingly fast over the road for a "mountain" bike. With me and and my son aboard, it can really fly.

700c Hybrid bike
Description:  Workhorse. Goes anywhere -- on road, light off road. Perfect for C&O Canal. Fendered all-weather commuter. This is the bike that re-kindled my interest in cycling. Major renovation in early 2010: Sugino cranks, Nitto Technomic stem, Nitto Noodle Bars, Dia-Compe Bar-End shifters, Brooks Flyer Saddle. I like this bike better than ever.

Road bike
Description:  Wanted a bike to keep at my mom's house in upstate New York. Found this in a local bike shop (the same one as the Univega). Shimano 105, bio-pace cranks. Very sporty feel. Great shape for its age, especially the paint.

Lifetime Odometer: 767.0 miles

Folding bike
Description:  The headbadge just said "Hon". I surmise it is the antecedent of Dahon, which was founded by DAvid HON. I brought it along with me on business trips. I get real antsy after more than two days without biking.

After carrying me a total of 538 miles during the last few years, this bike gave up the ghost. I was folding it to put in the trunk of a car and the frame broke in two places, one right right by each hinge. I salvaged the wheels. This wasn't really much of a bike, but I got good enough use out of it.

Lifetime Odometer: 538.6 miles

Road bike
Description:  Bought used in October 2004. Lugged steel. Whippier handling than my Rambouillet. Upgraded the front wheel 2008 and had the rear wheel rebuilt May 2009 by Universal Cycles on the Sora hub that came with the bike (but I doubt was original). This is a nice fair-weather commuter.

Sold it on 20 Apr 2022 to make room for Americano.

Fixed Gear Road bike
Description:  Found it in a junk shop for 10 bucks. Got a cheap set of track wheels off the web. My regular commuter till my office moved to the far side of a big hill. I loved this bike, but was hardly riding it any more. Not so good for my knees. Gave it away 30Apr22 to make a little more room for the Americano.
