I started long distance touring in 1976 with BikeCentennial. I rode with 8 strangers, who became life-long best friends, from Astoria, Oregon to Jackson, Wyoming in July 1976. We rode self-contained, and ate vegetarian. The tour was 35 days and 1,746 miles. I toured in Europe in 1978 and BikeCentennial again in 1980. I didn't do much biking after that until 2001 when one of my BikeCentennial friends called to remind me it the 25th anniversary of the ride, and got charged up enough to start touring again. Since then, I've done Bike Virginia, Tour de Shenandoah, Cycle Across Maryland, OKlahoma Freewheel, Cycle Around North Dakota, Across Ohio Bike Adventure, and the Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinac Tour. I plan on continuing to do the cross-state rides, with a different state each year. |
