Rode as a kid, a bit for the last 50+ years, and more seriously for past about 10 years. Rode an old dutch bike to work when I lived in the Netherlands in the 1960's and a 10 speed Schwin from the early 70's through the mid 90's. Then I bought an old 10 speed Peugeot US Express at a garage sale. I liked that and started riding more. Started riding with the Space Center Cycling Club (SCCC) in 2003. My first ride with the club was an incredible 40 miles on the Peugeot. I noticed that others seemed to be working less hard on their lighter road bikes. I bought a new Specialized Allez. An encounter with a pickup truck in Nov. 04 kept me off the bike until April 05. To salve myself following that incident, I bought a touring bike (new Windsor Tourist) and equipped it with fenders, lights, pump, compass, handle bar end mirror, rear rack with trunk, and a handlebar bag. I carry a folding spare tire, 3 spare tubes, tools, lock, and a first aid kit. I also have rear panniers and a front rack and panniers that I can fit when needed. I do most of my riding on the touring bike now. At the start of 2014 it had over 70,000 miles on it.
Started riding with the WOOF Pack, a group of about 6 retired guys and gals (and SCCC members) in the Spring of 2004. I have learned a lot riding with these experienced cyclists. As a result of their bad influence, I completed a number of centuries (including a century challenge) and a couple of double metrics. I did my first organized ride (Shiner Bash, Houston to Shiner, TX, about 95 miles) in May 05. Since then I've done lots of organized rides including the 2006 Houston to Austin MS-150 and the Bike Florida and Red River County Get-A-Way to Texas tours twice each--great tours, well organized, proceeds support various worthy programs. In the Spring of 2008 I completed a 450 mile round trip credit card tour to Port Aransas with our Woof Pack group and in the Fall of 08 a solo one week tour of over 500 miles. In 2009 I did a "Texas Independence Tour" (Home to Gonzales to Goliad and back home via the coast, visiting some places significant in the Texas war for independence) and a Texas Big Bend tour, both with the Woof Pack. In the summer of 2009 I completed an over 4200 mile cross country tour, New York City to LA via Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, El Paso, Tuscon, Pheonix, and San Diego. This was an organized tour, a product promotion, and I was paid to ride. So now it's 2014 and I'm still riding but I'm having trouble trying to beat that. I did do 780 mile tour (accompanied by some of the WOOF Pack part of the way) in 2011 to celebrate my 75th year. That tour raised almost $5,000 for The Independence Village, a local charity.
