I estimated I rode approximately 1,000 miles in my entire life prior to June, 2008. Even though I had 3 nicer mountain bikes, they never got the use they deserved. My banana seat and BMX bikes got more use as a kid.

I bought a singlespeed for Chicago, and I found out that I like fitness cycling and later became interested in cyclocross. Here are some of the highlights from my first, "real season," of riding in which the miles started to get logged in June, 2008:

2,179.2 miles (1,865.3 outdoor miles, between my cross/road, singlespeed, and mountain bikes; 313.90 indoor miles on the Expresso virtual trainer/racer); ran 17.8 whopping miles

1st bike race ever: Chicago Cyclocross Cup No.2 in Dekalb, Category 4B, on October 5th, 2008; placed 34/39; wiped out 4 times and not knowing what I was doing

2nd race ever: Chicago Cyclocross Cup Championship at Montrose Park in Chicago, Category 4B, on December 4th, 2008; placed 43/51; 20 degrees out, crashed HARD 4 times, and obtaining a painful shin-gash.

2009 Accomplishments (4,489 outdoor miles): no CX races this year, rode up Mt. Evans (elevation 14,264 ft), did 2 centuries in Colorado including the Sunrise Century, and rode my singlespeed road bike 204 miles in one day (in the flat midwest); ran the Rock Canyon half marathon in 1:55 as well for some cross training.

2010 accomplishments (3,410 outdoor miles): beat the train by 24 minutes from Durango, CO to Silverton, with a time of 3 hrs. 15 min over 47 miles in citizens tour; ran; ran American Discovery Trail Marathon in 3 hr 49 min; 6/9 in Cat 4 Pikes Peak Velo Cross

2011 accomplishments: 10th/114 ($45 prize!) in Iron Horse Road Race (2 hr 39 min). 5,037 miles this year!

2012 accomplishments: Wheels of Thunder (my first crit) Cat 5, 10th/17; Sunshine Hill Climb 10th/42 (54:14); Guanella Pass Hill Climb 11th/37 (1:08:12); Mike Horgan Hill Climb 10th/25 (1:27:35); Leadville Silver Rush 50 mtb race, male 30-39, 73rd/207 (5:53:52) shattered my face in 8 spots, and rode out the remaining 41 miles, earning a qualifying spot in the 100); Leadville 100 mtb race (9:11:43) male 30-39 (100th/352), overall male 321st/1338 finishers

Cyclocross Road bike
Description:  cyclocross frame with Ultegra components: 46/36 tooth chainrings and CX geometry have limited my top speed to 49.6 mph with my Easton wheelset that I use on the road...upgraded to an 11-27 tooth cassette in 2009 to help with the high/low gears for Colorado; upgraded to 50/34 compact chainrings and DuraAce chain on May 19, 2010 (mileage 4,155 between road and CX; cassette has ~700 more) . The bike weighs in at 20.0 lbs. with pedals and my super comfy Forte Classic seat.

Best accomplishment: 4 Blackhawk Bicycle Club members helped pull me during Ride Like an Egyptian (DeKalb, 2008) and I averaged 20.6 mph for 105 miles in 5 hours flat (avg HR=152)

. Retired as a road bike (now SS-CX) when I took the shifting components off for my current, Ridley road bike

Lifetime Odometer: 5,307.1 miles

Hardtail XC Mountain bike
Description:  2008 Trek 6000 series with SRAM-5 components: I keep Drifter tires (non-knobbies) for slower road rides and commuting purposes, b/c the shock has a lockout on it. I ram running some Nokian studded tires on it now and it's currently outfitted with a bike rack which brings the bike to a total of 34 lbs., yikes...hoping to get a much lighter 29er in the next year.

Best accomplishment: I rode this bike about 76 miles in an afternoon in the beautiful San Juan mountains

Replaced the chain with XTR at mile number 1,250. Sold in May, 2010 for $400...need to get a race worthy mtb that fits me appropriately.

Lifetime Odometer: 1,395.0 miles

Sold in July, 2010; very fun bike, loved to ride fixed gear back when I lived in the flat lands!

Lifetime Odometer: 1,491.7 miles

click to enlarge 1999 GT Richochet
Hardtail XC Mountain bike
Description:  16" frame with Shimano Deore LX components...WAY too small for me as evidenced by my crazy set-up: longer stem to accompany my 6'1" reach, but I had originally purchased it to do freeriding, before special mountain bikes were designed for that...not much of that in the midwest though and it doesn't handle BMX jumps well; was used as a commuter in Chicago that I feel comfortable locking up, because I have wheel and seat locks installed.

*sold in March, 2009

Lifetime Odometer: 801.3 miles

1997 GT Avalanche
Hardtail XC Mountain bike
Description:  my first aluminum bike. had pretty nice components too-LX I believe. (pic: for reference only)

Lifetime Odometer: 0.0 miles

1995 GT Karakoram
Hardtail XC Mountain bike
Description:  This was my very first, NICE, bike (pic is for reference only). In fact, I had my dad cosign a loan for me, because I wasn't even 18 and I wanted to build my credit. This was a chromoly frame, but mine had a red rock shox fork. The ghost flames in blue looked really neat, but it was just a picture. I was riding carelessly in the Byron Forest Preserve and hit a 3-ft drop off at about 20 mph with some farm machinery below that I managed to clear; however, I closed my eyes because I didn't think I was going to wreck and managed to break the fork, but stay upright in the process!
