 on getting Flats
I have discovered one significant cause of flatting on Wintry rides is patch failure.

A typically satisfactory patch job made during the Summer will not hold up in extremely cold weather. Specifically those one-step Slime patches (Scabs), which are really quite good for general tube patching. But they do not work well in sub freezing weather.

So, I've learned to use higher quality vulcanizing patches. You get a reliable, permanent patch when using a vulcanizing patch kit. You know the 2 step process using the vulcanizing fluid "glue" and then the butyl rubber patch applied over the tiny hole in the bike tire tube and viola' -a permanent repair. Problem is, the glue comes in small storage tubes and quickly evaporates after the first use -even if a cap tightly reseals the tube. You will be lucky to get 6 months use from an open tube of vulcanizing fluid.
