 Detours, Meets & Beets
Today I rode the Surly from home for my conversation ride. I rode to Cleveland Park and took the streets into downtown. Once there I ran into detours and was routed around downtown, but finally came out on Washington Street. I took it an d cut across to Old Buncombe Road then road out to Velo Valet where I stopped for a drink. Then I continued out Old Buncombe until I was north of Furman at Roe Ford Road. I crossed US 276 there and came in the north entrance to Furman. Then I rode around the lake and stopped at the Agape Center. I heard Roger’s voice - my partner from earl summer that had to return to Honduras. I could hear him speaking in his class. He came out and we had warm greetings and he told me that he now has a 5 year student visa and he is very glad to be back. Then Oscar came out and we went for our conversation. We had a good time talking but the time seemed to run out quickly. He went back to class and I saddled up on the Straggler and headed back to the north entrance. I left there and worked my way back to Old Buncombe to go to Travelers Rest. I stopped at the Mustang house and took a picture of what he has for sale - a Mustang and a Ford van. I rode on to TR on Old Buncombe and got on the trail by the Gazebo. I rode to my turnaround spot across from the creperie and turned back to the Gazebo and stopped for a drink.

I rode back down the trail without much fuss until I stopped at the Swamp rabbit Cafe. I went in and there was no line! I order a Just Beet It smoothie with beets, apple, walnuts, avocado, milk, and honey and a peanut butter chocolate chunk cookie to take home to Cissi. While putting The cookie in the pannier I ran into Darilyn. I had passed her on the trail not recognizing her out there. She went in and ordered while I waited for my smoothie. We sat at a bench seat in the cafe and talked while I worked on the smoothie (the beet taste was good, but it was very chalk-like in taste) and she ate her sandwich. She finished ahead of me and went on down the trail. I finally finished the smoothie and had a couple of slices of stecca with flavored oil, then washed it down with water. I took off down the trail toward town and met Ken coming out of town. Then I passed Darilyn along the falls as she stopped to talk on her phone. Furman Way in the park was blocked and I had to follow a detour to get through there. Then it was on through the parks and up the big hill to get home.

I have a cold and this ride was about my limit with this cold, but I got through it.
