Although the ride this afternoon was just shy of 16 miles, it was one of my most challenging rides of the year. The temperature was a mild 37°F. So far, so good. One challenge came from the wind---27 mph steady with gusts to 34 mph. The biggest challenge was the precipitation, a mix of rain, sleet, and snow.
Here is how I came up with the title of this post. On the southbound legs of this ride I was pedaling at 8-10 mph into the wind. That means that the sleet was hitting my cheeks and nose a 35-44 mph. It felt like a continuous barrage of needles hitting my cheeks. I tried covering exposed areas, but then my glasses fogged up. I finally found a technique were I could keep my head down enough to prevent direct hits on my face while looking over the top edge of my glasses.
My spouse thinks that I'm an idiot, she may be on to something there. Nonetheless, it was an interesting ride---glad that I did it!
