I noticed a funny thing on the way to work---there were no other bike riders. None, zip, nada. Not even day-labors riding on the sidewalks. Imagine that.
So far, today was the coldest ride of the year. Temperature = 4°F, Standing windchill = -17°F. Most county and local roads are covered with a layer of ice from yesterday's 50°F rain, which froze last night as the tempertures dropped into the single digits. I was warm enough though. Used and extra layer of gloves plus windbreaker ski pants.
I used State maintained roads to get to work. The State has plows and salt trucks out early, while the county and village folks sleep in. I don't worry about my traction (studded snow tires), however, I do have to watch out for cars sliding around. Picking a well maintained route is essential for safety on days like this.
The bottom line: No problems---pleasant ride to work.
The afternoon ride home was uneventful, except for a newpaper photographer took my picture. I gave him a release to use me image. We'll see if anything comes of that.
Update: The photo was published the following morning. Click here to see image.
