I seemed to be riding pretty slow, and wondered if racing to beat a couple lights on the way home last night really took that much out of my legs. I know my legs didn't feel that bad when I got home, and then I realized the wind was blowing pretty stiff out of the south and my jacket seemed to be parachuting, catching the wind too. Yea, it was a slower ride to work (avg 10.7 mph) into a stiff SW wind at 13 mph - even the downhill run on Walton Rd was just over 20 mph, instead of its usual 25-26.
The evening ride, to the bowling alley, was a bit of an adventure. After some rain & snow falling during the afternoon, the road surfaces were just wet but some ice had formed on my bike that presented a couple problems to get ready for the ride. The first ice problem was on the rear rack preventing me from being able to put my trunk bag in the tracks that secure it to the rack. I started sliding the bag in the track until it was stopped by the ice. I slid it off, and then slammed it on to see how far it would go – little further. So I forced it off, and slammed it on again – a little further yet. I did this about 4 or 5 more times before it reached is proper position and latched into place. Then as I was about ready to roll, I just needed to place the computer in its mount, and discovered the mount had some ice accumulated in it too. This being a more delicate piece of equipment, using the ‘force it on’ method would not be wise. So, I pulled out my pocketknife and used it to scrape the ice out of the slots that secure the computer to the mount. After a few seconds of work, viola the computer was seated in its mount & I was ready to roll.
Having recorded the current weather conditions before shutting down my work computer, I knew I would be riding into a headwind all the way to the bowling alley. After working into a headwind riding to work this morning, the wind has changed direction, now out of the NNW, and has intensified being over 20 mph. Additionally, from previous rides with similar scenario, I knew riding Natural Bridge Rd from Cypress to past Fee Fee Rd would up a slight incline straight into the wind – and being right along side of the airport, there is nothing in this area to hind from the wind. During that long, slow, trudging stretch of the ride, my feet and hands got pretty cold even though the rest of my body was fairly warm from the physical exertion.
