Here in the Midwest, Gravel road riding is gaining widespread popularity. Partly because of all the gravel farm roads we have, and partly because of the popularity of bikes with 29 inch wheels, they thrive in this stuff. Cyclocross bikes are also a good choice for gravel. In the midwest, you can find Gravel road rides and races of almost any distance you want. It's big.
Around my house, we have a few gravel roads and crushed limestone Rail-Trails, not as much as some places, but enough to check out this type of riding. So, I planned a route linking all of the local gravel sections near home.
I was able to ride 10.7 miles of gravel in my 38.5 mile loop. With 20-30 mph winds out of the west, I was happy to be able to ride the Long Prairie Trail back home into the vicious wind. The LPT is a paved, flat and tree lined Rail-To-Trail path.
The wind was blowing so hard, it was actually howling and whistling as the crosswind blew through my frame, helmet and spokes.
Out on Blaine Road, I came across a farm that was having some kind of event for vintage farm tractors. There must have been 25 to 30 old tractors, most of them looked like brand new.
I could have added a few more miles of gravel on the Stone Bridge Trail, but I was pretty tired, and cut it a little short.
