People have been asking what's going on... Here's the latest...
On my last visit to my doctors in Madison, on March 31st, I learned what is happening to my legs.
When the first thing the doctor says is "You are extremely rare", that's not a good sign. So far 15 tests from my February 15th muscle biopsy are not enough to figure out what I have. They do know that some of the cells in my muscles are not able to convert food to fuel for the muscle. They're calling it Metabolic Myopathy.
More tests are being done, and a muscle sample is going to some muscle experts in Boston, with hopes of finding answers. They said it would be 2 weeks before they get more results, it's been 4 weeks now, nothing.
So, until they know what the cause is, they don't know if it can be stopped, if it will stop by itself, how fast, slow, or if it will spread to other muscles. They did say, all of the muscle loss so far, can not be reversed.
They also became concerned about the chest pains I was having (and still get now and then) a few years ago that put me in the hospital for tests. Nothing was found in those tests. My doctors have asked for the records from all the tests done back then. They'll be looking for a connection. Hopefully the two are not related. Muscle loss in my legs is far less serious than something heart related.
That's it for now. Hopefully, more possitive results will come in very soon.
Oh yeah, my doctor did advise my to continue riding my bike. He thought it was helping to keep blood flow in the muscles. And he thought if it weren't for all my cycling, I'd be in much worse shape. He is amazed at some of the athletic things I'm doing, (like getting up from a chair) considering the muscle loss I've got.
So, now when I go out for a ride, I say, "Doctor's orders, gotta go ride!". WoooHooo!
