Ride Description: From Roland Olson Forest Preserve to Poplar Grove.... Not normally a mountain biking (singletrack) trail, the Long Prairie Trail & Stone Bridge Trails were technical mountain biking at its best today. The snow drifts were frozen with deep footprints making them virtual reverse rock gardens. Some of the bumpiest trail I've ridden in a long time.

As the sun came out and temps went up, the trails started to get a little soft, but not too slushy.
I did have to walk a couple sections. But the big wheels were amazing, and rolled over everything in sight.

Ten out of ten on the fun factor scale. Most fun I've had on a bike in a long time.

Normally, riding the Long Prairie Trail does not count as mountain biking (singletrack), But, today the Long Prairie Trail & Stone Bridge Trails were technical mountain biking at its best. The snow drifts were frozen with deep footprints making them virtual reverse rock gardens. Some of the bumpiest trail I've ridden in a long time. Picking a good line was crucial if you wanted to maintain momentum and traction. And avoiding off camber stuff (which may be slippery) was part of good line choice.

Plenty of ice with frozen footprints and an inch or two of snow on top too. This is the kind of stuff that can result in a crash if you don't have studded tires. But the big fat Surly Larry's, run at 7 psi, were up to the task in providing plenty of traction. I was pretty cautious, and only felt the tires slip once on the ice today.

As the sun came out and temps went up, the trails started to get a little soft, but not too slushy.
I did have to walk a couple sections. But the big wheels were amazing, and rolled over everything in sight.

It could have been much more exhausting, but thankfully there were stretches of dry pavement between technical snow drift riding.

Today's ride scores a perfect 10 on the fun factor scale.
