This year's Great Pizza ride was a very different route than previous years, going S/SW to Waterloo, before looping through Maeystown and heading back up toward Valmeyer & Columbia. The wind was stiff out of the south, making for a nemesis of a head wind for the first 20+ miles. It was so bad that you had to pedal to go down hill and maintain speed. Caught up w/Ken Steiner and his friend Mike at the first rest stop, so working together allowed for less effort to make it to Maeystown - raising the avg speed from 13.7 at the first rest stop, to 13.9.
It was then time to head north on a flat road (Bluff Rd - along the bottom of the bluff) cruising @ 20-22 MPH with minimal effort thanks to the now tail wind. Avg speed was 15.5 upon reaciing the rest stop outside of Valmeyer (mile 32). There were a few more flat miles before reaching Columbia. After another quick rest stop there, we climbed up Cherry St - dropping the avg back to 15.0 - before making our way back to Millstadt, and finishing with 15 MPH avg.
