Today I decided to ride to the north end and try climbing Paris Mountain to get home. The ride north was uneventful with the exception of a 6 inch turtle on the trail running as hard as he could to get across it. He wasn't very fast, but it wasn't for the lack of effort. I stopped at the railroad car at Furman for a drink from my bottle and refilled it from the fountain there. Then I rode to the north end where I also took a good draw from the bottle. I turned back south and rode to the north side of Furman where I turned back toward US 25. I crossed 25 to get on Altamont and climb the TR side of Paris Mountain. I rode most of the mountain in 2nd gear, some in 3rd, and some in low. Normally I put it in low and stay there the whole way up. My best time up the mountain is 19'41". I timed the climb today to see if I could get anywhere close to that, but I didn't. I climbed it in 27'26". I think that I am stronger than I was back when I hit 19'41", but I am also carrying about 30 pounds more weight. I was a little disappointed in the time, but was actually glad that I could make it at all. I finished my bottle at the top and headed down the Greenville side. At the bottom I stopped at a convenience store and drank a bottle of Gatorade and filled my bottle with ice water. The rest of the ride was uneventful, except I cut through the BJU campus. Even though some things are the same it is sure different than when I was a student.
