 Conestee Park and Perimeter Road
Today I left the house totally undecided as to where I wanted to ride. I wanted to try to get close to 40 miles and do something a little different than I normally do. I rode down East North Street to Cleveland Park. I got on the trail but headed south instead of north. So I followed the trail to where it ends south of Greenville Tech and rode up the hill to Parkins Mill Road. I headed south on it to where the trail picks up again and heads into Conestee Park. Even though the trail is a MUP, when it gets into Conestee Park it is not very bike friendly. I rode through the park, but think that I'll actively find ways to get around it in the future. I came out of the park and took Main Street (Conestee not Greenville) to Perimeter Road that circles the old Donaldson Air Force Base or SCTAC as it is now known. I turned onto Perimeter Road at the golf course off the northeast end of the runway. I started circling the airbase and turned off on the marked routes that the Spinners use out there. On Tuesday evening they have a 32 and a 22 mile route marked off around Perimeter Road and through the countryside south of the airbase. They have several groups that ride them with levels from the "hammerheads" to easier levels of riding. I was close to 14 miles getting out there and figured to return avoiding Conestee Park, so I hoped to get off Perimeter Road at around around 26 miles. I circled Perimeter Road and got off on the 32 mile course. I had just gone under I-185 when I saw a small group closing on me as I was climbing a hill. They caught me and it was three girls (in their 30s I guess.) But when we broke the hill I pulled away from them. I wasn't too sure where I wanted to cut across the course to the return side on Reedy Fork Road, but I picked a spot that I thought would get me back in the mileage frame I wanted. I missed it by about 6 miles, so by the time I was back on Perimeter and turned back toward Conestee I had 34 miles in. In Conestee I stopped at a convenience store and bought a 28 ounce bottle of Gatorade. I filled my water bottle with ice and poured it full then drank the rest of the bottle. I headed toward Mauldin and cut off by the backside of the old Braves Stadium and took Ridge Road back to town. I wandered back from the south end of the trail into Cleveland Park and took East North Street back to our neighborhood. I ended up at 46 1/2 miles but it all worked out.
