 Contractor apprehension
So how much should one pay a contractor "up-front" to do a bathroom remodeling job?

I realize this is an off topic subject for my cycling blog but I am a bit perplexed about a situation. I am in the midst of this remodeling project with projected labor costs estimated at about $9000. I should state that the $9000 includes basic plumbing and tiling materials: pipes, fittings, wallboard, some electrical. Other costs in addition include tile, plumbing fixtures, and cabinetry.

As a percentage of the contractors total labor price, the contractor asked for 12% upfront. With the job 25% complete he asked for an additional 27% of the estimated cost. Now with the job perhaps 40% complete (a generous estimate of the overall progress), he is asking for an additional 27% payment. The contractor would like to have 2/3 of the estimate quote paid for, while only having performed 40% of the total job. It's not a matter of trust so much as the idea of paying for work before it has been completed which leaves me with -apprehension...
