Stung by pelleted snow east bound. Having no guilt feelings about "no work commute" rides. At this point in the on going weather system, it is not safe or practical to go the distance required for my work commute. Better days are coming?!?
Stayed close to home (within 3 miles). Noticed for the second day, the canal water level is receding, noticeably. The process of draining the Erie Canal West of the Genesee is a slow process of letting canal water into streams and creeks via a system of drainage gates.
I'm guess it takes several days to open all the gates along the region. From the Genesee River West to Lockport there are no elevation changes and consequently no Locks for a 50 mile or so distance. What has to happen is first a flood gate is closed near the Genesee then the drainage gates are opened by hand all along the 50 mile stretch of the canal.
Open the drainage gates too much and flooding could occur downstream. So the process takes some time to empty the canal in this stretch. I would imagine the canal East of Rochester is pretty much empty at this point as the process there is faster draining most of the water into the Genesee.
