Since changing to the 1.5" Drifter tires, pedaling the Cruzbike requires a greater effort.
First thoughts on the matter of increased effort are that it is a more significant workout. The fatter tire has more surface contacting the road and a larger (by .250") overall diameter. Lower tire pressure exacerbates that condition.
The .250" increase in the overall wheel diameter may be a minor factor, but none the less it contributes to the overall need for greater pedal effort. Tread design too is a factor. Though the inverted tread is designed to minimize rolling resistance, there is still an added factor in the aggressive nature of the tread. The main factor would most logically seem to be the increased road contact as being the greater factor of the increased effort. I will maximize the tire pressure on my next ride.
