Todays indoor ride "Effort Value": 47.45lb-mi Using the W-D value(lb-mi) as an effort statistic, is a way to compile and track cycling effort. There is a validity to the statistic in that whatever the total weight factored in the calculation, be it rider weight only (as in indoor stationary cycling), or rider + bike/equipment weight(outdoor cycling), the effort value generated is a consistent number ride to ride.
With indoor cycling, the weight factor is aproximately 20-40 pounds less than outdoor cycling(bike weight is a non-factor indoors). Comparing effort between indoor and outdoor rides one can see clearly the added weight of an outdoor ride requires more effort. Consequently average speed would be higher on an indoor ride when using effort comparable to an outdoor ride. The W-D value reflects those differences consistantly.
When comparing outdoor cycling and indoor cycling effort, one can see a consistent effort being expended from ride to ride reflected in the W-D value. Whether an indoor or an outdoor ride, the W-D statistic (lb-mi) is consistent! Consistancy is what makes the W-D effort value a number worth compiling and tracking. Using the W-D effort value as a tool to track changes in cycling effort makes it a reasonable motivational tool!
In order to raise the effort value statistic a cyclist needs to increase effort by cycling more forcefully! Either pedaling faster or cycling with heavier loads requires more force and increased effort. Either factor changes(raises) the W-D value in a consistent and track-able way.
Since the W-D effort statistic is a consistent value number ride to ride, it allows a cyclist to track effort and use the statistic as a tool in a motivational way!
In summation: Using the W-D effort value number tracks effort from ride to ride and is an indication of the amount of effort change, increasing or decreasing, from ride to ride. What I find worthwhile is the W-D effort value is a statistic indicative of rider effort that can be tracked ride to ride and be a motivational factor for improving effort and performance. During the forum presentation I was informed that my W-D calculation was really a simple HORSEPOWER calculation. other useful links: bikecalculator.com/wattsUS.html www.noping.net/english/
