Chen's is our favorite Asian restaurant. Actually, it's our restaurant of choice whenever we go out to eat!
Years ago it was the Aloha, a Chinese-Polynesian themed restaurant. It was complete with an indoor pond, a bridge over the pond, painted day-glo lobsters on the bottom of the pond, and plastic palm trees surrounding it to further enhance the atmosphere. At periodic intervals over the course of the evening a fountain would erupt with a whoosh of spray. On weekends the "Williams Hawaiian Trio" played "Tiny Bubbles". The old couple that owned the place were very formal acting but a bit rumpled looking. I can remember many occasions hearing them argue in their native Chinese dialect, over some aspect of their lives or business. My guess is they argued over money but were worth millions. Those were the days, we ate there almost every week.
My buddy Al can vaguely remember a story about Zombie drink effects at the Aloha. Five of us were stunned one time, when Al stood up from the table and blacked out, like a tree cut down...TIMBER!! Could have been some other psychoactive influence too, those were the days! -an old man reminisces.
Today at Chen's, celebrating Bike-N-Gin birthday, we had a great meal which included Seafood soup with Indusiata and Dyktaphoria mushroom, fresh veggie Spring roll. For the main course Ginny's dish had Chicken and Jalapeño peppers and Bok Choy, my plate was fried Scallops and Jumbo Shrimp on a bed of Broccoli along with fried rice -great stuff.
Perhaps the most understated part of the meal besides the tea, and after dinner fortune cookies, would be the ZOMBIES and Bho-Pa. Our Server Bho-Pa, knows us as regulars. She called me "Zombie Man" once, when on an occassion I had more than one. We love her chatty, sing-song accent, and rhetorical manner of speaking.
So later after calculating and paying the bill I realized I paid Bho-Pa a 40% tip! It was an accident but a wonderful dining experience is worth a big tip of appreciation! But the fact of the matter is she made us a heck of a couple of Zombies!
