Today I was being "stealth pursued" on the ride in to Hilton. I spotted the pursuer when scanning my helmet mirror. The hi-viz wearing rider seemed to be hammering the pedals as I glanced a second look. The fellow biker was approximately 1000 feet behind me. I decided to make it a contest, increasing my cadence. Shifting gears to increase my speed, I was cruising at 18-20 mph for a time. Scanning my mirror to ascertain the gap between us -it didn't seem to be widening. I thought this guy may have the ability to catch me, I hammered on! The pursuit lasted about 4.5 miles before making the turn on West Ave.
No question the rider behind me was working hard to catch me. He would have had a good chance of accomplishing the task had I not noticed the pursuit. I really dislike being passed by a stealth rider. So I turned my effort into the sort-of contest.
Understanding the "Rabbit" and "stealth pursuit" scenario, is the realization that it is always better when the rabbit knows he is being pursued -it becomes more of a contest. Realizing there was a rider attempting to catch me did both of us a favor. As Rabbit, foreknowledge of being pursued increases the effort level for both Rabbit and Pursuer. That said, I love being the pursuer in stealth mode. connect.garmin.com/activity/295835675
