After adding back 4 links to the chain, the Cruzbike now shifts like a dream!! This is the culmination of a desire to upgrade my Sofrider with a front dérailleur and multi chain gear set-up.
I did the whole job with very minimal advice and no previous working-on/installation experience. It all went logically! And except for a purchase error with "road brakes" and a lot of extra chain linkage work, the feat was accomplished smoothly. All in all a real confidence builder. Seems like I could work as a bike mechanic in a pinch when needed.
Todays ride was a short one to Spencerport, mailing/depositing some bill payments.
Testing out the gearing was fun. Using the 24 tooth Crank and the 34 tooth mega gear on the cassette(24x34) is rediculous! Almost anyone (except me) could out walk that pace! Climbing PineHill (a short 8-9% grade) is easier than ever with gearing to spare!
The Upgrade Sum-up: replaced 26 inch wheel with 700c wheel (front/drive wheel only) -decreases wind resistance aero-dynamics; replaced existing front brake to accomodate larger diameter wheel; replaced single 42 tooth crank with new triple (46/34/24 Race Face chainrings, Andel crankarms trimmed to 153MM); added new front derailler(Shimano Acera); added clamp-on cable stop; added thumbshifter (Sun Race)
