A Moment With Meeko
For the past several years I have had occasion to exchange greetings with a seemingly happy-go-lucky guy named Mr. Meeko. I know his name only because of a sign post by his mailbox. Every so often while on my commute to or from work, I would see him sitting on the stoop at his house. Nearly every time when I see him I give a shout out "howdy Meeko", and he'd reply in a seemingly gruff verbal manner. It was quite some time until I recognized that perhaps he may be annoyed by the nature in which I call out to him... Like so many individuals I cross paths with every day, I know faces better than names. I often wave and call out a greeting to complete strangers, and for the past several years that was the extent of my friendship with Mr. Meeko. I had not seen him around much over the past few months but this week he was back on the stoop seemingly deep in thought. So I figured today if he was outside I could stop by and formally introduce myself. Maybe he is curious as to who this fat guy on a bike pedaling by shouting hi is all about. So determined, I hoped today was the day, a good time to stop rather than just a shout out as I pedal by...
I came along on my bike today I noticed Mr. Meeko was out. I called out "Howdy Meeko -How you Doin'?" Seemingly startled, he he gave his usual gruff sounding reply. As I was stopping my bike at his driveway he fairly charged my way then slowed. For both of us, I am sure we equally shared the moment distinctly a combination of alarm and perhaps apprehension. I extended my hand, almost reminiscent of the the moment my neighbor Tooley and I shook hands last year for the second time in 22 years. Meeko appeared a bit leary but curious. He sniffed me -a little bit nerve racking for me. I said good boy Meeko, and I petted him. For a moment he seemed tense and apprehensive as I gently rubbed his check and stroked his chest. I think he appreciated that offer of friendship. It's a good day when you can make new friends. Meeko reminds me so much of my long gone Manfred the Wonder Dog.
