I spent the afternoon making her vintage Raleigh road ready.
Ginny and me were planning on an easy ride to Spencerport and back but...The ride had to be aborted due to a tire malfunction on her 32Y/O bike (internal belt frayed). Interestingly, her bike had the original front tire and tube (both 32 years old and functioning flawlessly!), that was not where the problem occurred.
Before we started the ride, I checked the tire pressure and lubed the brake and shift cables as well as the chain. I pedaled her bike around on the driveway and all seemed good. We started the ride and I hear a rubbing sound Wreat...wreat...wreat... What the? I circled behind her as she pedaled along and spotted the problem. The rear tire was bulging! We turned back and once home I could see that the internal belt of the tire had frayed inexplicably! The tire was a Kenda gum-wall about 2 years old.
I replaced Ginny's tires with new Kevlar belted Bell tires and anti-leak tubes. I totally cleaned her drive line, and the bike looks remarkably pristine. Eventually I will re-grease the bearings but right now everything seems good.
I bought Ginny this bike back in 1980 from a bike shop near Monroe High School. George Renny's Bike Shop was one of the premier shops back in the day... George Renny, now touring the universe, was one of the Rochester Bike Club's founding fathers. Anyway, Her bike a 1980 Raleigh Sprite 10 -Touring/Road bike, was originally paired with my Raleigh Grand Prix. The Grand Prix, in need of major refurbishment, was given First to a friend who later gave it back. I then gave the bike to another Friend who spent much time and effort making it road worthy. I haven't seen the Grand Prix in about 5 years. I hope it is still serving it's purpose well.
