Our Anniversary ride -36 years of wedded bliss with Ginny aka: Bike-n-Gin; We had a very relaxed pace on the way to Brockport. About 2/3 of the way there my back tire developed a leak. We walked .4 mi back to a picnic bench where I could work on the bike from a comfortable position. Ginny waited patiently under a tree while I had some unexpected issues attempting to fix the flat...
The no-leak fluid Stan's NoTubes Tire Sealant, used in the tubes of my Cadenza Dahon bike, is a couple of years old and it appears to lose effectiveness after a time. This is the second time I have noticed a coagulated mass -a ball of rubber lodged within the tube as if the mass settled out of the compound. Perhaps this occurs with the season changes, or maybe from a lack of rotation -as when the bike is being stored through a season...In any event I keep a spare tube and patches, a pump and CO2 cartridges, so there should never be a problem flatting -Right? Well maybe...
Decided to try locating the leak and patch it up. But both of the patch kits in my saddlebag had cement tubes which had dried up... Still there is a back up tube I keep in the bag too. The back-up tube had been previously patched 3 times and was functional the last time I tested it 3 years ago... This time around the back-up would not hold air. I've got one CO2 Cartridge left and a seat post pump. So I reinstalled the first tube managed to extract one last gummy drop of cement from one of the patch kits and patched the tube in a tentative way seemed like the leaky wheel could be rideable and I could get closer to home before having to push/ walk the rest of the way.
Well the patch held 2.2 miles. Thereupon Ginny biked home to get the Volvo. Meanwhile I walked another .5 mi until Ginny got back with the car.
