Bill Smith -interesting character with a story to tell. A Brief Friendly Conversation ~the afternoon ride was interesting, different! I got a (sort-of) late start. I was in the garden picking a load of Cukes to carry in to work. Left the house about 1:01pm (or so).
I was making good time when a man walked into the middle of C-P.T.L.Rd. and waved me to stop. I thought: this guy needs some kind of assistance/information -Bikerjohn to the rescue!
He held a 35mm camera in his left hand and asked if he could take my picture. Why of course! So vain I am!
The guy starts to ramble off a story about buying a truck in Leroy at a dealership there.
Something like: "I bought this truck from Leroy motors and it got burned up. So, I went back to the dealer to get some records from them, and they had the sale listed as a truck cab and chassis only. Yet it was a pick-up truck...." and "can you imagine that?" I said, wow that's tough?!? Sorry to hear that. I've got to be on a bus by 1:30 and I'm running late. "Wait, wait, that's a perfect shot", he clicks the camera. He continued: "And now I've borrowed my Mom's car for the umpteenth time," he said!"
I look and over by the side of the road, there is a vehicle parked 50 feet away. His Mom's car I guess. "Can You tell me where Peck road is", he asked. Yes its just a half mile further South, I gotta get going now, I tell him! "Wait, Wait! Move off the road there is a car coming". And, "Oh. That's a perfect picture there", he clicks the camera again. "I'm supposed to be at farmer(blah, blah's)..."
"Do you know (blah, Blah), he asks?" No I'm sorry nope. "Do you know Bill Smith?" No! Who is Bill Smith, I ask? "He's my uncle blah, blah blah ... an AP photographer..." Wow! I extend my hand to shake his. I gotta go, sorry. And What is your name, I asked?
"Well would you believe I'm Bill Smith's nephew?" "And I'm Bill H.Smith!" Wow, I said! See ya! The 35ish looking "Mr. Smith" says "Farewell and hop to it", or something. er...Oh yeah, it was "Ride on young man", he said. Then I thought I said something witty back as I pedaled away, but I can't remember what it was(maybe HiHo Silver?!) No, actually my reply as I rode away was: If I was 20 years younger, I'd be 34, and for sure a young man! See Ya! ...Anyway "miles of smiles" and I wonder if he had film in that camera?
