Comments: At 85.6 miles, it is the longest distance I have ever biked in one day.
I met "brucew" in person for the first time. Bruce is a great biker! We shared the day on the trail and pedaled about 72 miles together on the way to Palmyra and back. It was a day of meeting interesting people and seeing the sights
Along the way a fellow biking solo across the region caught up with us looking for map interpretation assistance. He was from one of the Carolina’s, I think he said. He started cycling on the towpath in Pembroke and was headed to Sodus. He was well equipped for his tour, said he spent the night camped along the towpath. He looked no worse for the wear but said he was looking forward to spending the night at an Inn at Sodus Bay. He probably had another 40 to 50 miles to go.
We stopped by to see Fred. Fred is a consummate renaissance "man of much expertise". A life long biker and hiker, at 77 years old, he could be considered the Yule Gibbons of this area. Fred took first prize ($30) at a recent auto show for his restoration of a 1926 model "T". Fred makes excellent wine (I call it "towpath red"📷 from wild grapes he harvests along the trail. Fred was not home when we stopped by, too bad, he is a great "tour" guide.
Stopping for lunch, I saw this fellow, "a plumber", he said, who "makes $5000 dollars for emergency holiday repair jobs". He was having a smoke and drinking a beer while taking a rest from his bike ride. He had a pack of store bought tobacco and rolling papers. I took the chance to offer some of my homegrown tobacco to him. I smoke a pipe and happen to take pride in harvesting and curing tobacco from my yard.
There was this airline pilot on layover riding his "Bike Friday". He has been all over the world and takes the bike everywhere. "Best investment he ever made", he said.
Along the way to Palmyra we saw Dave. I was introduced to Dave through my friend Fred. Dave, a retired HS teacher, is a fountain of knowledge on many of the NYS trails.
Eating Ice Cream from Abbott’s was a good break on the way back. Abbott’s is a local franchise with an outlet in Bushnells Basin. There was a large flock of Ducks meandering expectantly canal side, behind the Ice cream store. The "Duck Show" at Abbott’s Ice cream Store was entertaining. The show and the Ice cream made fixing a front flat more bearable.
We crossed paths with many people out taking advantage of this great Columbus Day. I am a bit disconcerted with the numerous parental types riding along the trail with their children, setting poor examples, not wearing helmets or practicing proper trail etiquette.
