Wild Ride with Jeff and Avery
Today I rode the Surly from the house to Linky Stone Park to meet Jeff and Avery. Avery was there waiting on us when I rolled up and Jeff came in a minute later. We are a recovering lot. I am pretty much recovered from my accident and it is the least of the three of us. Jeff was run over by an angry drunk girl while walking in a parking lot and sustained many physical injuries and some serious brain damage. Avery was run over by a semi while riding a motorcycle and had every bone on the right side of his body broken, his heart was moved away from where it belonged, and he has had some serious brain damage. Avery hasn’t ridden for quite a while and it’s been a couple of years for Jeff. We slowly worked our way up the trail riding all the way to the turn around point across from the creperie. We worked our way back to Furman and Jeff and I rode on campus to circle the lake while Avery went on down the trail.

We circled the lake and met a friend of Jeff’s mother. We got back on the trail and about a mile south of Furman we were being passed when Jeff’s right front wheel went off the trail, he lost control, went into a ditch, and the trike rolled over on him. He was okay but shaken. The passing riders came back and helped me get him off the trike and out of the ditch, then we pulled the trike up, and started checking everything out. I went back down to see if anything was still in the ditch and I found his taillight. While down there the yellow jackets got my right ankle a few times. I helped Jeff back onto the trike and made him make sure that his wheels were true, the brakes were working, and it was shifting properly. I had a rag in my pannier and used it to clean him up. The rest of the ride made me nervous, but it didn’t seem to bother Jeff much.

We stopped at the Swamp Rabbit Cafe and split a Waikiki pizza. We talked at the cafe for quite a while, then headed on down the trail. His trike is a 7 speed hub shifter and two of the gears were acting up, so we stopped by Free Hub Cycles downtown, but they were covered up with work and wouldn’t be able to look at it until next week. Jeff lives very close to there so we split ways at that point and I went through the parks and climbed the big hill home.
