 Odd Ride
Today I rode the Straggler from the house and immediately knew that I had no rear brakes. I stopped at the tennis courts and tried to adjust it, but the barrel adjuster was run all the way out. I rode on up the trail, but it was closed at Hudson Street. I worked my way around it and the closed streets to get to Carolina Tri and took the bike in and had them fix and adjust the brakes. While I was working my way out of there to Washington Street a girl on a bike waved like everything at me. I later caught her on the trail just past Cedar Lane and she greeted me with a lot of enthusiasm. I asked her if we knew each other and she asked "Don’t you work at GE?" She and I rode about the same speed and we passed each other a couple of time from there to Furman. As I closed in on TR I noticed that I had a wheel sucker. He followed me to the Creperie intersection then thanked me for the pull. He left the trail shortly after that and said that he was going to ride Little Texas Road and Paris Mountain. From there I rode to the north end of the trail, stopped for a quick drink then headed back down the trail. About a mile and a half south I ran into the friendly girl again and I ran into Ken outside of Sunrift Outfitters. I turned north and ride with him to the north end again. While we were there talking a couple in matching kits passed us and asked if we we okay. Ken and I headed back down the trail and while we were approaching TR I heard voices but couldn’t figure where they were coming from. That same couple was riding on the side road just in our shadow and I could hear them talking but couldn’t see them. Then they passed us. We passed then again at the light in TR across from the post office. The girl said something about the tortoise and the hare. Ken was a little insulted by it, but I thought it was true. They passed us again just south of Blue Ridge Drive and I told the girl that I thought we were done with them. Ken and I got off the trail at the Orange Line but Ken followed it to OBR while I took the Hampton Avenue Bridge to Washington Street. Then I took Broad Street to Falls Street and Camperdown the Cleveland street but Cleveland was closed. I worked my way around it and back to Cleveland Park. I took the Hincapie Path to 1st Baptist parking lot and Cleveland Street to Gardenview. I was climbing up Woodland Way when Ken came in behind me again. We rode together until I cut over to the zoo parking lot. I got onto Washington Street then onto Hillside. About halfway up Hillside I stopped to talk to Part who was talking to his friend Chris. We chatted for a while. I rode on up the hill and stopped at the Gratton driveway for a drink. Chris and Max were out back playing street hockey.
