I drove to Tigerville to meet Ken and ride to Saluda and back with him. Once I was there I saw Mark with his Trek Emonda and Sherry and Gina. Ken showed up and the five of us took off from Tigerville. It was very foggy which made riding a challenge. Just a couple of miles out we started up and climb Callahan Mountain. I knew that there was a painted message at the base of it that said "grunt." I kept looking for that massage to let me know when the mountain climb started. I also knew that the ride to the start had some significant climbing. Gina and I fell behind the others but caught them sitting at the top of a hill. That's when I discovered that I had missed the message and we were at the top of Callahan. I was thinking that if the approach was this bad that I'd never make Callahan. We came out on Old 25 and headed up the watershed. It was several miles of steady climbing. We climbed all the way to the North Carolina line. Then it was up and down the rest of the way to Saluda. We stopped at the bakery there and I had a Gatorade Frost with a mystery breakfast bar. We left there and went down the Saluda grade that averages 6 to 8% for 3 miles. Once at the bottom Ken took a short cut into the mountains. He got lost and we ended up riding back to Saluda for 3 miles on a gravel road. Then we headed back out of Saluda except we followed Dividing Waters instead of climb Callahan Mountain again. It was a tiring ride.
